South End Caravan Park |
Walney Island, Lancashire |
Brief Outline: This South End settlement is certainly unusual and some might say controversial. However it should be no surprise to find that the ASDA Board has given it an unambiguous 2.2 ranking. While it might not contain any houses it is undoubtedly 'a community where people live' making it a settlement. South End Caravan Park has a lot going for it, particularly when it comes to randomness. It also has some of the highest wind speeds in the UK so it is advised to bring a coat! Situated on Walney Island near Barrow-in-Furness there is some picturesque lake district to drive through on the journey which is always a good start to a roadtrip. The Caravan Park itself boasted a wide range of static caravans with some looking extremely homely. It is worth noting that you can rent a caravan from just £14 a night, a fabulous opportunity to stay in South End. There are also all the facilities you would need, laundrette, bar, swimming pool, tennis courts and a shop. Away from the caravan park there is a farm which map evidence would suggest is called South End Farm but no names for the buildings could be found. The southern end of the island (called South End Haws on maps) is taken up entirely by a nature reserve, so it isn't possible to drive around it. This again provides an activity different from that usually found in Southends. The main attraction is the fairly uninteresting lesser black backed gull which to the untrained eye just look like a normal seagull. For some inexplicable reason the gulls nest on the ground and seem very angry at people walking the routes of the reserve. Given their less than high altitude nesting preferences it seems unsurprising that foxes have been decimating the gulls population. There are nice views of Morecambe Bay from the island and the scenery is constantly changing with some causeways only accessible at low tide. Piel Castle is one attraction that can be reached at low tide. Elsewhere there are a couple of nearby villages with pubs, one such pub called Castle House serves a decent pie. |
