Brief Outline: Within the bustling city of Sheffield, amongst many a tree (for it is, of course, the most densely vegetated city in Europe per square metre), the peaceful and idyllic roads of Southend Place and Southend Road lie in the outer suburbs. Southend Road is one of the major Southend routeways in the country, with countless houses making this one of the most densley populated Southend regions in Europe. It's crazy and unconventional plan makes it a tourist hotspot for many a road fan, not more so because such a long and convoluted street means many Southend Road signs are present. And off the main Southend Road, the lovely tree and shrub lined Southend Place, which is only wide enough for one parked car and a moving vehicle (for it's a one way road), beckons the visitor in. After heavy downpours, the local wildlife takes to the street, primarily in the form of insects such as snails and slugs, plus other critters. While it can make walking down the road and taking a photo by the sign rather tricky, it's good to see a healthy eco-system that can support the nearby insectivores and potentially further carnivores up the food chain. What is also interesting to note is that, while there are rumours that it sometimes 'rains gravy' rather than water, these have yet to be confirmed by punters outside of the Steel City. |
